Mexico is a very old country, once inhabited by ancient civilizations dating back to 10,000 years ago! The country is dotted with remnants of the Aztecs and the Mayan civilizations, which the Spanish eventually conquered when they arrived in the early 1500’s. The Spanish destroyed many of the pyramids and built churches on top of them. You can see evidence of this throughout the country. The Mayans exist today, and live predominantly in the Yucatan Peninsula, Merida, for the most part is predominantly a Mayan city.
